Changes

It has been a little while since I posted anything on my blog. I have been really busy with my business and have been working really hard to grow it to where I want it to be.

Almost six months ago, I walked away from Rockwall PD to start my new journey. I do not regret leaving the City at all. I miss all of the people that I worked with and fought for as a Sgt. There was no way that I would be able to do anything to help the troops as I was shut out by a supervisor that ruled by threat, intimidation and fear. There is no reason to have to put up with that in life and it would only become hard on anyone I tried to help. Law Enforcement is a calling, but it is also a job and there is always another one out there. There is a large number of RPD looking and I hope that they find what they need. That being said, I have to get off my butt and get to Royse City and start being a Reserve. It is a calling and is in my blood.

I have had to make a lot of changes in my life. Personally, kettlebells are a way of life for me. I absolutely love what they do for me. I recently took a PT test and ran a mile and a half in 13:41. While that is not world record, I have not run in over 5 years. I attribute it to kettlebells. I am no longer teaching kettlebells to individuals, other than my core group of guys. I will hold the occasional workshop. I love them and will hopefully be able to attend the RKC again this year for me.

I have actually closed my website Go Home Alive and will be training people on an invitation only basis. My core group of people has asked that I keep it that way as it helps keep the training to the standards that I want. This will also help keep egos out of the mix. Everyone, including me is there to learn. I will continue to train and improve my skills. I will continue to teach seminars and for Law Enforcement because I love it.

I have decided that by cutting out somethings, i will be able to have a better focus on my business and be able to improve in other areas.

I will take new people on for martial arts, but the group has to approve. This is only fair as it is their journey also.

Look to the blog for more stuff. Just cause I am not running a major business, does not mean that I do not have anything to say.

Incredible Strength

This is an incredible display of strength and skill. Strength is a skill in and of itself. It must be practiced to improve. How much practice have these guys done?

For My Wife

My wife grew up with Goldberg and they were very close. He introduced her as his first girlfriend at an autoshow that we went to. He was a really nice guy. I went to his Muay Thai school in oceanside this summer. It was really a great place to train.

Delays in Posting

I have gotten bad about posting over the last month. I am also not able to take any new kettlebell students lately. The good news is that it is not all bad. I have been so busy with my business, Amazing Athletes that I have gotten behind in training others or writing. I absolutely love working with kids and being able to teach them great exercise and fitness habits. I am also able to continue working with my martial arts and kettlebell students.

I am also going back into Law Enforcement. Hopefully after tomorrow, I will be a reserve Police Officer for Royse City, Texas. They are a small Department outside Dallas. They are squared away and progressive, they will probably explode in growth in the next five years. I am really proud to be assocciated with them. Chief Shelton is a past president of the Texas Tactical Peace Officers Association and is a firm believer in taking care of his troops. I am ready to get back out on the streets at least part of the time.

Secret Training Philosophy

Secrets

Every advertisement for Martial Arts and Self Defense touts their “Secret Techniques” to make you unbeatable and invincible. I wish that it was that easy in the real world. When was someone unbeatable in the real world? Ali was beat, Tyson was beat and the current crop of professional fighters will all suffer a loss one day. I have lost fights in my life. Nobody is invincible. The funny thing is that many people know the best kept secret already.

The secret is not just one thing, it is made up of several different aspects. Part of the secret is that they know that they can be beaten on any given day. They work as hard as they can to enhance their chances of winning. Professional fighters train up to eight hours a day in the weeks before a fight. They work hard and continue to improve their skills. Oh wait; there is the other part of the secret, hard work. They want it more than the other guy, so they work their tails off in preparation for a contest.

How does this fit in with self defense? The advertisements are a sales gimmick. They want your hard earned money, but cannot deliver on their claims. I do not believe that any martial art is the total answer, including Shen Chuan. I have never seen the one technique that will win every time. I do think that every system has something to offer, whether what to do or what not to do in life. I think that part of the real answer is realizing that you are responsible for your own safety. Knowing this you need to work hard at what you are doing, be it martial arts, exercise or your job. If you want to survive a fight for your safety, you have to work hard to make it happen. That does not mean you have to spend your whole life training and working out. You just have to work hard when you have the time to train. It is better to train thirty minutes a day at full blast than to do nothing.

I believe that hard work is the most underrated “secret” out there. In today’s world, everyone wants the quick and easy solution. Nobody wants to put forth the effort required to advance or improve in any aspect of their lives. They look at life as if they were owed everything with little output from their own efforts. I see it often in my martial arts classes as well as the classes that I take to improve my skills and chances. I often have people come to the school and leave after a few classes, because it takes some effort on their part to improve. I have seen people come to a Brazilian Ju-Jitsu class and walk out after realizing they would not be Gracie level after one class. It takes sweat and effort to become good at anything, but many people are not willing to make the effort. I recently earned my 5th degree black belt, it was not given to me just for showing up. I am happy to have earned it, but I am proud of what it symbolizes, years of hard work, years of sweat and toil to learn as much as I could.

I apologize if this is more of a rant on a soapbox then a real essay. I believe in hard work to get anywhere in life. I believe that you are responsible for your safety, not anyone else. I also believe that I am responsible for my own failures and accomplishments. It all comes down to the ability to work hard to reach your goals and desires. I have a long way to go as I have not met mine yet, so hopefully we can take the journey together.

Going to be a great fight at UFC 81

First, sorry about the delay in posting. I have had quite a few LE training days as well as my regular stuff.

Brock Lesner is an absolute monster. He has an incredible work ethic and great wrestling skills. He is a machine in the gym. I believe that he will win against Frank Mir tonight at UFC 81.
